The Mycelium Entity installation in the NATURponty exhibition was developed and produced by NATURponty artist Anne-Mie Melis with the support of Lucie Powell, Roger Lougher, Rufus Mufasa and NATURponty youth forum members.
The Mycelium Entity visualises the idea of an imaginary protective being that is living with us, invisible to the eye. It nurtures all living organisms in and around Pontypridd.
The sculptural shapes that are part of the pink costume are made of mycelium material and were home grown over the course of the project. The pink mask and costume was made with recycled pink bailing twine used to pack hay bales (kindly provided by farmer Clive Johnson, Maes Bach Farm at Tonteg, Pontypridd). The string represents the mycelium root system in the soil under our feet.
The costume and mycelium shapes beautifully come to life in the short film.
The shrine-like, three legged sculptural object, that is part of the installation is also composed of mycelium material shapes. If you look closely you will actually see Reishi mushrooms that have grown on the material. The totality of the installation is dedicated to the symbiotic nature of fungal mycelium networks present in the soil. We hope it casts a protective veil throughout the Pontypridd community.
